Can You Change the Head Later? A Compatibility Worksheet

Check replacement-head compatibility through exact body and head codes, connector details, neck fit, material, tone and supported functions before ordering.

Head-compatibility cover with two blank product records, a copper cord and magnifying glass.

Sometimes, yes. A replacement head needs to match more than the visible connector: the neck fit, supported weight, material, finish and any functions must work with your exact body. A similar-looking screw or a shared brand name is not enough to approve a pairing.

The easiest time to plan a second head is before buying the first build. You can ask for a supported pairing while the complete specification is in front of you.

Begin with the body you actually own

Find the order record and copy the manufacturer, full body code, material and production or purchase date. Add the original head code and any connector description supplied with the order.

If you bought a warehouse unit, use that unit's specification rather than a current custom listing with a similar name. A later product revision may have a different neck arrangement. Photographs of the existing connection can help support identify it, but do not dismantle concealed parts just to obtain a picture.

The custom doll guide covers the broader build decision. For a replacement, keep attention on the existing body and the proposed head as one pairing.

A factory example, not a universal standard

Climax's official ULW 885 Renata collection identifies a standard M16 neck screw for its head option. That is useful information about that product family, not a guarantee that any head advertised as M16 will fit it. Climax's ULW 885 specification

Irontech's FAQ also describes arranging a different head and body combination, while separately directing buyers to option-compatibility guidance. That supports asking about a pairing; it does not establish an unrestricted cross-brand replacement system. Irontech's factory FAQ

Keep confirmed combinations separate from proposed ones. A missing factory answer should remain "not yet confirmed," rather than becoming a recommendation through repetition.

For the Renata example, the supported statement is limited: the factory offers a head selection on ULW 885 and identifies M16 hardware. That does not confirm a separately purchased replacement head's code, seating dimensions or colour match. This worksheet contains no independently verified cross-brand pairing.

Ask for confirmation of the complete pairing in writing. A statement that the head "fits many dolls" leaves too much open.

Work through a hypothetical request

Suppose you own Body A and want Head B. These are placeholders, not tested models. Your order record gives Body A's code and material, while Head B's listing gives only a connector label and photographs.

At that point, the connection is a lead to investigate, not a pass. Send both links and ask the supplier to confirm mating hardware, neck seating, head weight and tone. If the connector is confirmed but the neck clearance is not, the overall pairing is still unresolved.

If the mechanical fit is approved but the finish differs, you have a different decision: whether you accept the visible mismatch. Record that tradeoff before ordering. This keeps appearance preferences from being mistaken for a mechanical fault later.

These are decision states, not tested combinations. A confirmation for Body A and Head B does not clear Body A with another head that uses the same connector label.

Skin-tone names are not colour standards

Two manufacturers can use the same tone name for different colours. Lighting, camera processing and makeup also affect photographs. Ask for a relevant reference rather than matching two unrelated promotional galleries by eye.

For an older body, explain its age and finish when asking about the replacement. A newly supplied head may not reproduce the appearance of a body that has already been handled and cleaned over time. Do not request a promise that photographs cannot support.

Installation is a separate question

Once compatibility is confirmed, obtain the installation instructions for that connection. Do not force a part that resists, use the head as a lifting handle, or improvise an adapter from a similar-looking fitting.

Plan supported storage for a spare head and clarify whether its wig is included. Keep the new head's code with the original order record, so future care questions identify which head is attached.

Start with DollWOW support and send the existing body record plus the proposed head link. If you are still choosing the original build, browse custom dolls with future head changes included in your requirements from the start.
